The Benefits Of A Transmission Engine Rebuilding

Tips for a Dirt Bike Bottom End Rebuild

Rebuilding the bottom end of your engine, whether two or four-stroke, can be a fun and rewarding job. Additionally, a considerable amount of money can be saved by taking on the work yourself versus tasking a shop to perform the work. These statements are only true, however, assuming the bottom end rebuild is performed correctly. This is a huge caveat, and for the average weekend warrior who doesn’t perform this task often, unfamiliarity with technique and componentry can lead to errors.

Successfully rebuilding your bottom end starts with planning and preparation. Starting with tools, you’ll need a few specialty tools in conjunction with your standard sockets, wrenches, etc. Namely, the correct flywheel puller for your specific engine, a flywheel holding tool, a crankcase splitting tool, a blind bearing puller, and a crankshaft puller. Using heat to assist in removal/installation of the bearings and crankshaft is an effective method, so an oven and freezer are also noteworthy items.

You need to have a copy of the factory service manual or equivalent for your particular vehicle. I highly recommend reviewing the sequence of events and procedure in advance of executing the work.

Bottom ends are taken apart for many different reasons. If a major failure occurred, the scrutiny of the rebuild will be at a much higher level than a bottom end that is merely being reconditioned. If any problems were persistent when the machine was operated, such as a poorly shifting gearbox, or leaks between the crankcases, the causation of these issues must be identified prior to reassembly.

Replacement components are a major factor to consider, both in terms of cost and engine performance, when diving into a bottom end rebuild. Replacing bearings, seals, gaskets, and refurbishing the crankshaft either by rebuilding or replacing it is essential. It’s recommended to peruse your service manual or microfiches ahead of the rebuild to generate a list of replacement components.

Handy XR600R rebuild tips

XR600Rs are pretty bullet-proof but when something does wear out or break there’s nothing much easier to work on (short of a two-stroke) than Honda’s big air-cooled single.

There’s no better guide to rebuilding an XR600R than the genuine factory service manual, but there are a few tricks that aren’t in it…and some anomalies that are.

Time for a refresh?

If something’s gone bang and you’ve got a rod poking out of the crankcase you know you’re up for a rebuild, but the most common reason for unbuttoning an XR600R engine is a top-end refresh.

A smokey exhaust and increased oil consumption are the first signs you’ll need to do some work – worn valve seals and piston rings are the usual suspects.

Oil consumption varies. Old (aren’t they all) XR600Rs can use as much as a litre of oil every 1000km and still run pretty good…but it’s a sign they’re well on their way out. By comparison a freshly rebuilt engine will probably use around 200ml per 1000km.

How to start your freshly rebuilt motor with confidence

You’re dripping sweat in your home garage after just stuffing your freshly rebuilt engine into your beloved project car. After days, weeks or maybe months chasing down parts, heading to all the local machine shops and checking (and rechecking) all of the tolerances and procedures, you’re ready to put your pride on the line and light the candle. Hearing your engine run is the only thing you can think about, but these first few minutes the engine is running are the most important time of its life—and your pocketbook

Know what’s going into your engine

Mark Rapson, Lingenfelter’s VP of operations, says the most important thing about firing an engine is having it appropriately lubricated before you even think about hitting the starter button. “It’s like painting a car,” Rapson says. “People see a shiny color and clear coat on the outside, but it’s really the prep. It’s kind of the same thing with a motor. If the clearances aren’t set correctly or you don’t use the proper lubrication, no matter how diligent you are when you start it, you’re going to have failure.”

Choose your fluids

The engine oil and fuel debates will never end, especially as both continue to develop. Lingenfelter usually uses Royal Purple synthetic oils, except for initial engine firing—that’s when the team opts for a tried-and-true mineral oil. Engines using flat tappet camshafts probably will require more of the additive zinc dialkyldithiophosphate than engines with roller camshafts because of the high-wear nature of flat tappets.

Find your mistakes

Yes, you’ve made one, if not two. Even the folks at Lingenfelter had to chase some fuel-delivery gremlins in their state-of-the-art dynamometer cell. Check your engine for fuel, coolant and oil leaks, and make sure you’re getting power to all of the right places. For computer-controlled engines, make sure that you have the right ECU, tuned correctly for your first fire.

Prime it

Older engines that feature distributor-driven oil pumps sport a handy detail: easy priming. A tool available at nearly any auto parts store can attach to the chuck of a drill and spin the oil pump, priming it. Modern engines don’t rely on distributors, so Lingenfelter simply makes sure there is no fuel or spark and cycles the engine over with the starter to prime the oil system. With the proper assembly lube on the camshaft and other wear parts, this shouldn’t cause any excessive wear and should get oil heading into the right places.

Engine Replacement Tips

Engine replacement requires different approaches for every year, make and model. Consequently, I would suggest getting a service manual specific to your vehicle.

So, Engine replacement is much more complicated than simply pulling the old engine and bolting up a fresh one. If your vehicle is in relatively good shape engine replacement makes more sense than replacing the vehicle.

If Your Old Engine Had 150,000 Miles On It; So Do Other Parts Like;

Sensors and relays

Some Basic Tips That Should Be Done Or Checked; Before Engine Replacement;

Check the motor mounts. Replace them if they are worn; loose or cracked.

Check the condition of the clutch or torque converter, transmission, CV joints, U-joints, etc., and make any repairs as needed.

Some items that will be mounted on the engine such as manifolds; brackets, accessories, spark plugs, oil filters, sensors, etc.; will probably be easier to install on the engine while it is still out of the vehicle. Preassemble as much as you can, then finish the rest of the items once the engine is in place.

Install new oxygen sensor(s). Also, highly recommended on high-mileage engines; to guarantee proper fuel feedback control; good fuel economy; and emissions compliance.

Install new belts and hoses (also, check automatic tensioners and idler pulleys and replace as needed).

Install a new coolant temperature sensor and thermostat. Also, highly recommended; to reduce the risk of overheating and possible engine damage.

Install new spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (if equipped).

Scan the computer for fault codes, fix any problems as needed, and clear the code memory.

Check for any (PCM) flash updates that may be available from the (OEM) and reflash the computer as needed.

Check for any engine related technical service bulletins that are out on the vehicle; and make any upgrades or changes as recommended.

Used Engines

A used engine is one that was likely pulled out a vehicle that was wrecked; or had damage to another one of its mechanical systems; that ended up sending the car to the junkyard.

CUMMINS ISX AND N14 ENGINES: TIPS AND TRICKS FOR REBUILD

The N14 and ISX engines are some of the most popular engines Cummins has produced, and even though the N14 has been out of production for years, many are still in use today. If you’re one of those people who is running either the N14 or the ISX, odds are you’ll need to do a rebuild at some point. We’ve compiled some tips and tricks to help you make the most of your next rebuild on your N14 or ISX.

Completing an inframe rebuild on an N14 is fairly standard, but you shouldn’t ignore the camshaft when you do it. The rebuild gives you the perfect opportunity to investigate for any additional signs of wear.

PROBLEMATIC VIBRATIONS

Unlike on the N14, removing the camshaft is more a part of the rebuild process on the ISX. Once the camshaft or camshafts have been removed it’s a good idea to check for other signs of wear.

CLEANLINESS

Whenever you’re working on your engine, cleanliness is very important. This is especially true of an ISX. This engine is highly sensitive to debris, and it especially becomes an issue when the oil passages are exposed. If debris gets in those passages it can damage other components, like the crankshaft.

GENERAL CHECKS

It’s also a good idea to take a minute or two to observe everything. For instance, check the rocker arm to see if the bushings show signs of wear. If copper is showing, then it’s a good indication that you should replace them.

Car Upholstery Cleaning Tips

UPHOLSTERY SPOTTING TIPS

Spots and spills on your upholstered furniture are inevitable. But there’s no need to panic. Here are some helpful tips to help you treat various types of accidents.

As with all spot treatments, it’s important to first test a spotting method in an inconspicuous area and wait to see how it dries. If you detect any change in the original color of your fabric or a water ring forms, do not proceed. Instead, contact our office.

While there is a vast array of spotting products on the market, many of these can cause more damage to your fabric than good. Therefore, the safest spotter we regularly recommend to our customers is Folex. This gentle, residue free spotter is safe for carpet, upholstery and even area rugs! For your convenience, we carry bottles of it at our office and on our trucks. In case of emergency, you can also purchase it at most grocery and hardware stores.

Spotting Steps:

Blot up excess moisture from the spill

Lightly blot with cool water (warm water may set the stain)

Lightly dampen a white cloth with cool water and then spritz the cloth with Folex.

Gently blot the affected area of your upholstery being careful not to rub and fray the material.

Let the spot dry.

Prior to treating any pet contamination spots, it is important to test the spotting method in an inconspicuous area so see how your fabric responds. If you see any change in the original color of the fabric or if a water ring forms upon drying, discontinue spotting and call our office for further assistance.

Cleaning Methods & Tips

Here are a few helpful carpet and upholstery cleaning methods and tips for you to try. We specialize in cleaning carpet and furniture fabrics if these methods do not provide the results you hope for.

NOTE: Depending on type and age of carpet or fabric, putting anything on it to clean up a spill could discolour it. This is often true when the whole carpet or furniture piece needs to be cleaned and not just one spot

TIP 1: Only use a white towel, or old clean and well washed towel to blot spills. It has to be absorbent to work properly. Be aware that many fabrics people cut into rags will not work because they are made of fabrics designed to repel staining which is not going to help pick up the stain in your carpet or upholstery.

TIP 2: Blotting up a spill is almost always your best method. Avoid rubbing which can force stains into the fabric making it harder to clean.

General Spills

If you have to clean up a spill, use a towel and place it over the spill.

Step on the towel to blot the spill. Do NOT rub it. Absorbing the stain gently will protect the fibers.

Keep repeating this until dry.

Then mix white vinegar 50/50 with cool water, enough to rinse the area a few times. The vinegar may help to prevent the spill from setting into the fabric and becoming a stain.

Between rinses use more towelling.

Rust

Use some lemon juice you can buy in most grocery stores which has a high acidic level

Drip some lemon juice on the rust spot but do not oversaturate

Use your finger to gently massage the lemon juice into the rust spot

Let this sit for 5 minutes

Return with a white towel and blot the towel on the rust spot

Repeat if necessary.

Pet Stains

Acting quickly to treat urine messes can save your carpet from staining.

Place a white towel on spot to soak up the area and stand on it. Do not rub hard!

Repeat a few times to absorb as much as possible

Mix white vinegar 50/50 with cool water, enough to rinse the area a few times

Between rinses use more toweling

The vinegar mixture rinses your carpet and reduces the risk of discolouration

Useful Tips For Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstery cleaning is one of the best ways to keep your furniture looking good and new. You can easily add a touch of elegance to your home by having your upholstery regularly cleaned. Taking care of your upholstery starts during the buying process. When choosing upholstery, you typically factor in the color of your walls, ceiling, carpet and other furniture. But it is also important to take into account the material from which the upholstery is made.

Upholstery fabric suffers wear and tear over time. It helps to know which material are durable and requires less maintenance. Knowing the upholstery material also helps determine which method of upholstery cleaning to do in the future.

After you’ve done your research about the upholstery materials, you may find that proper maintenance isn’t at all complicated. There are certain cleaning methods you can easily do on your own, while others require the assistance of professionals

The following are some tips to keep in mind while cleaning your upholstery:

• Fresh stains are easier to remove than old ones. This means you should try to remove stains as quickly as possible, when it hasn’t penetrated yet deep into the fabric.

• A common problem with upholstery is faded colors. Aside from daily use, exposure to direct sunlight as well as to bright neon and halogen lights contributes to discoloration.

• Upholstery made out of natural materials are more prone to wear and tear because these materials are usually sensitive to dry air and low humidity.

• Before cleaning the whole upholstery, consider testing on a small, hidden area to see how the material reacts with the product and method you plan to use. This helps you avoid potential damage to the upholstery when you use the wrong product or cleaning method.

• There are three popular mechanical methods of cleaning upholstery: vacuum cleaning, brush cleaning and rub cleaning.

• Use brushes with soft cloth particularly when cleaning smooth and delicate material.

• Experts suggest cleaning from the outside in. Localize the stains and clean them one after another. This should be done regardless of the cleaning method you are using.

• You have the option of using dry or liquid detergents when cleaning fabrics. It is best to do your research and determine which one to use for each upholstery material. Remember that one product may work great for a certain material but cause damage to another.

• For flax upholstery, never use detergents.

These tips should help keep your upholstery clean and fresh. If you don’t have enough experience or you lack access to the necessary products and equipment, then it is best to hire a professional upholstery cleaning service to get the job done for you

Upholstery Cleaning

How to clean upholstery

Professional upholstery cleaning can be expensive, with a typical 8-foot-long sofa costing about $150. That may be worth it for the level of service and expertise you’re getting, but if you know what you’re doing, you can DIY furniture cleaning.

For small furniture messes, DIY upholstery cleaning can save you money and preserve your furniture. Learn what the upholstery tags on your furniture mean before you DIY

Absorb the stain

Don’t let stains set in: It’s important to act quickly if you have a spill. Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels. Dab, don’t rub, or you risk damaging the fabric. Start at the outside of the spot and continue toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. Blot until barely damp. Scoop up any semi-solids (like food spills) with a spoon.

Vacuum the furniture

Use all of your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachments to thoroughly clean up loose pieces of dirt, pet hair and other debris that can make your furniture dirtier.

Identify the types of stains

Food, dirt, pee or poop (from little ones or pets), wine, coffee and other stains respond well to steam cleaning. More stubborn spots may need more than one treatment. For oil-based or other hard-to-lift stains, chemical-based cleaners are required.

Stain Removal Steps

Act Quickly! Most carpet available today has been treated with a stain-resist treatment in the factory, so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken. Even with that treatment, spills will still settle in. The longer you wait, the higher the probability is that a spill becomes a permanent stain. Remember, staining is influenced by many factors, and no carpet is completely stain proof.

Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white paper toweling (no printing).

Don’t scrub it in! Scrubbing may cause pile distortion in the affected area and push the spills deeper. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry. For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a rounded spoon. Solids should be broken up and vacuumed until completely removed.

Pretest any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to be certain the solution will not damage the fiber or the dye. After applying several drops to the testing area, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or damage to the carpet. If a change occurs, another cleaning solution should be selected.

Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth and work in gently.

Why Commercial Cleaning Is Different From Domestic Cleaning

Tips to Select the Right Office Cleaning Company

Maintaining a sanitary and clean office is important to the success of your business. Most companies will hire a professional office cleaning service to address this, rather than hiring a janitor full-time.

Cleaning companies will usually come in after business hours and clean all areas of your office space. You will probably find a large number of cleaning companies in your city, so you will want to be sure you are choosing the right one for you

Take Inventory of Your Needs

The cleaning needs in your office may vary drastically from others. With this being said, it’s important to first take inventory of your cleaning needs before you begin to compare office cleaning companies. How many employees do you have? How many people visit your office per day? Do you have public toilets or are they reserved for employees?

Busted water pipes. Overflowing restrooms. Emergencies happen and one of the first things you will want to know is if your office cleaning company will come in on a moment’s notice to minimise the damage and clean up the mess. Most office cleaning companies in Adelaide, and other the major cities, will provide emergency cleaning services. However you need to be aware that some may charge quite a premium to come to your office in the middle of the night to clean.  Make sure the company you hire is equipped and prepared to handle a wide range of cleaning catastrophes.

Cleaning Supplies

Always determine whether a cleaning company will provide supplies within agreed costs – or will you have to pay extra? Some cleaning companies will bring their supplies and equipment with them, while others prefer you have a supply closet on site where they can keep their materials. While on this subject, be sure you also find out what kinds of supplies they use. If you require green, hypoallergenic or biodegradable products, can the company ensure they will be used 100 per cent of the time?

How to choose a cleaning service

In this article, we’ll walk you through what home staging comprises of (apart from cleaning!), plus discuss the best cleaning services that you can recommend to your clients who want to give home staging a shot. Let’s jump in!

What does home staging entail?

There are various components that come into play with home staging, but by far the most important step is for homeowners to clean and tidy up their homes. It goes without saying – selling a property that’s spick and span is a lot easier than selling a property that looks like it’s owned by a hoarder!

Cleaning aside, home staging also consists of:

“De-personalizing” the space. This basically means getting rid of any personal pictures or memorabilia, and trying to achieve a “blank slate” (think: a stylish but impersonal hotel room). This way, potential viewers can actually picture themselves living in the space.

Styling the space. The closer you can get the property to looking like it belongs on the cover of Home & Decor magazine, the simpler. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds – simply accessorizing with pillows, throws, candles, and other decorative items will do the trick.

A quick and easy way to get started with home staging

Here’s the thing: most folks reach home late at night, and by that time, they’re tired out from work, and not in the mood to do a deep-clean of their apartment. To nudge your clients onto the right track, and help them get started with home staging, why not recommend them a cleaning service that they can use?

On top of that, make sure the vendor’s prices are clearly displayed, with no ambiguity or grey area. A1 Facility Services, for example, displays their pricing plans clearly and transparently on their website; their prices are pegged to the size of the apartment, and they also detail the specific tasks that their cleaners will undertake in a session.

HOW TO CHOOSE A COMMERCIAL CLEANING COMPANY?

These days most companies outsource cleaning services to professional experts. It is easier and at times cost-effective than hiring a full-time team. The cleaning service providers usually work after office hours without disturbing the daily office course.

EXPERIENCE

First and one of the most important things is to focus on the experience of the companies. Having been in the market for quite some time enhances the skills and experience of the experts. This also ensures better results. They must have had exposure to various cleaning requirements of commercial, industrial, as well as residential segments.

REPUTATION

Trust is very important when hiring a cleaning company. Yes, the latter is responsible for working meticulously that too with very less guidance or inspection, but you need to be sure that they are trustworthy.

SERVICES OFFERED

It is important to understand all the services provided by the companies you have shortlisted. Initially, you may not require all the facilities but you wouldn’t want to run around looking for more options when you need them. Therefore, besides the basic cleaning, vacuuming, and dusting get the details of all the cleaning services provided by the companies.

TRAINED STAFF

Cleaning is not just a normal process. It requires qualified and trained experts. quality and safety have to be given utmost priority, hence, regular training is required. The on-site working staff should be professional and be able to take complete care of themselves, the property, the inhabitants, and the environment around.

How To Choose A Commercial Cleaning Company

Cleaning times.  The number of hours spent cleaning determines quality.  Franchises and contracting companies don’t use their own employees and have no way of knowing or controlling how many hours are actually spent cleaning.  Privately owned companies hire their own employees and can monitor their hours to make sure they are spending sufficient time cleaning.

Standardized equipment and supplies.  Franchises and subcontracting companies have no way of knowing or controlling the type of equipment and supplies that are being used because they aren’t providing the service themselves.  They leave that up to the franchisee or subcontractor that accepts the job.  Privately owned companies purchase their own equipment and supplies and have direct control over what their employees are using to clean your facility.

W2 employees.  Privately owned companies hire and train their own W2 employees to perform the work.  They can perform background checks and get references on the employees they hire.  Franchises and subcontracting companies do not hire their own employees and have no control over who is hired to clean your facility.

Quality control.  Privately owned companies supervise and inspect their own employees work.  They can monitor their own staff to make sure they are complying with the company’s cleaning practices.  Franchises and subcontractors have little control over the quality of work performed by the cleaning crews because they can’t supervise or monitor the cleaning crews themselves.

How to Choose the Right Commercial Cleaning Company

A clean, sanitary and disinfected office, business facility or commercial building is necessary for success, good image and to guarantee the health and safety of employees, clients and all visitors. Your customers demand it and your employees will thank you for it – and so will your productivity rate. But one of the most important questions is: How do you choose the correct commercial cleaning company?

The most practical, smart and cost-effective option: you can choose to outsource cleaning responsibilities to a local cleaning business. When you hire a commercial cleaning company, the company conducts cleaning after-hours (or at regular intervals in highly trafficked facilities), and the cleaning services company is responsible for tidying up, from cleaning restrooms, vacuuming, to restocking consumables, removing trash and disinfecting highly touched areas. But there is more…

Outsourcing a local cleaning provider offers numerous benefits. Businesses can avoid hiring an on-staff or salaried janitor or avoid cleaning the facilities themselves without the proper protocols. Plus, the cleanliness of your business is guaranteed with knowledge, experience, the right products, procedures and all the required licenses. Your office will always look tidy, professional and most importantly correctly disinfected and sanitized.

Reputation and Experience

Trust is necessary when hiring a business property cleaner. This company’s employees will be on your site, most frequently, after hours, after you and your employees have gone home for the day. Plus, the company is responsible for working diligently with minimal supervision from your part

Training and Screening

The best commercial property cleaners take training seriously! They work only with the most qualified and trustworthy cleaners, and they provide them with ample training to ensure quality, safety and clients satisfaction.

Avoiding A Scorpion Sting

Is There A Season For Scorpions?

I am frequently asked if there is a season for scorpions.  I assume that because people are asking me this question, they are seeing more scorpions than normal, but the funny thing is there really is no, “season” for scorpions, per se.

Mating Season

I will say that there are times of activity that are greater, mating season is normally July and August in the desert areas around with a gestation period of approximately one year.  Depending upon the species of scorpion and the length or size of the scorpion they can have 1 to 105 offspring in their litter size, or an average of 22 – 26 babies.  The juveniles will go through their first molting in 7 to 10 days, and between 11 and 15 days, they will begin to disperse from the mother’s back

Busiest Times By Season

Based on our calls for scorpions, the two busiest time of the year for scorpions is the beginning of summer and end of fall.  A better description might be based on average nighttime temperatures when the temperature remains at 76° or better at night time, the scorpions remain active and continue their hunting against insect prey.  As the temperatures dip in the fall, then we get more calls of scorpions invading the inside of homes and businesses.

In the spring and toward summer as our temperatures rise again, any scorpions that have overwintered inside the home or structure begin to become active and look for food.  Again, we get lots of calls to come and take care of their scorpion infestations inside their buildings and homes during the springtime and early summer, and of course, nighttime time temperatures haven’t leveled out the scorpions tend to be more noticeable as they hunt in the day and come back in for warmth.

The Effect of “Monsoon Season”

Two other reasons scorpions seem more prevalent in summer time are “monsoon season” and homes that don’t maintain a regular pest control service.  During our monsoon season, we tend to get heavy moments of rain, sometimes flash floods, and all this excessive rain will wash scorpions from their hiding spots in holes and cracks and crevices and so stir the activity and movement of scorpions when flooded.

Scorpion Extermination Experts

There are approximately 2000 different species of scorpions, and all of them are venomous. However, only about 25-40 species are venomous enough to cause severe damage to humans. One of the most potentially hazardous species is the bark scorpion. Most of these potentially lethal scorpions cannot kill healthy adults, but the lives of infants and the elderly are at high risk. The neurotoxins released by these pests can cause such disconcerting symptoms as convulsions and shortness of breath.

The striped bark scorpions usually hides under rocks and surface debris. They make their way inside  homes through the attic during the day and then come forward at night, in search of food. Their sting can cause uncomfortable swelling and itching that can last for several days

If you have children and elders in your house, you will need to make even more of an effort to ensure your house is free from these deadly pests This preventive measure is necessary to keep your home safe and protected, and it is beneficial to call professionals to exterminate unwanted scorpions from your home.

Chemical control products may be necessary in certain situations, but rest assured that our exterminators are trained to apply these products only to areas where scorpions often hide. An exterminator from Pest Control can even examine your home for anything that may be attracting scorpions, such as water sources and debris. We can even suggest a maintenance program to minimize their population in the area

LOOKING FOR SCORPION PEST CONTROL SERVICES

Scorpion Control: How to Get Rid of Scorpions in Your Home

Scorpions. They are venomous, predatory pests that can be found on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica. They’ve been roaming the planet for over 300 million years — and can live up to 25 years old. Getting stung by one of these creatures can hurt, but in most cases, it won’t kill you. Nevertheless, you don’t want them hanging around on your property. But is pest control for scorpions the same as it is for other types of pests?

Now, before we dive into the different options for scorpion control, let’s get to know this painful creature a little better. A scorpion is part of the arachnid family because it has eight legs. However, the scorpion is very different from its 8-legged counterpart, the spider.

They range in size from 0.3 inches all the way up to 9 inches and their bodies are composed of three parts: a head, trunk, and tail. The tail contains a stinger that can be maneuvered all different ways to attack their victim. This tail is venomous, and in some cases, deadly. Scorpions also have strong pincers that can be used for grasping prey or defending themselves.

Worldwide, the number of scorpion species is around 1,750, but only 25 of them are known to be capable of killing a human with their venomous sting. Therere two different species that are known to be highly venomous – bark scorpion and the stripebacked scorpion.

However, neither of these scorpions are as lethal as the Indian red scorpion or the deathstalker. Both of these types are part of family of scorpions. A sting from either of these creatures could be deadly.

Signs You May Need Transmission Repair

Transmission Repair Services

The transmission is one of your vehicle’s most critical and complex parts. It is responsible for taking the engine’s power and transmitting it to the drive axels through the use of different gears. When your transmission begins to slip or fail, it is almost always a cause for concern. Once you have decided that your transmission needs some help, you will need to decide on the three options for repair, rebuild or replacement. We service automatic, manual, and 4×4’s with our master certified transmission specialist standing by, and we also offer box truck transmission repair and some RV transmission repair.

Transmission Repair

This is typically the lowest priced option and can be applied if there are only minor issues with the transmission

Other problems such as a clicking or whining noise, gear slipping, missing forward or reverse, and delayed or erratic shifting may also be due to some similar problems such as a defective solenoid or low fluid levels. However, they might also be due to more serious issues, which brings us to the next option in transmission repair.

If the transmission has enough damaged or worn parts, then a complete rebuild might be necessary. In the event of a rebuild, the entire transmission is removed from the car, taken apart and fully inspected. Worn, defective, damaged or failed parts are removed and replaced with fully functional quality parts. The transmission is then reassembled and installed back into your car. Transmission rebuilds require specialists as it is a custom process for each unique vehicle.

Remanufactured or Replaced Transmission

In some cases, the entire transmission must be replaced. Depending on the vehicle, there may not be any brand new transmissions available, so instead, you will be getting a remanufactured or refurbished transmission. In a replacement job, you will be getting a full transmission with all parts replaced and brand new. This is generally done in a factory setting and not at the closest transmission shop

Things To Consider When Choosing The Right Transmission Treatment For Your Customers

Of all the things that can go wrong with a customer’s vehicle, a transmission problem is often one of the most dreaded. That’s because the cost of a transmission rebuild or replacement can run up to $4,000. When faced with a bill this big, many owners of older vehicles decide to start looking for a new car rather than fix the transmission in the current one.

But not all transmission trouble has to break the bank or result in the end of a vehicle’s life. Depending on the severity of the problem, you might be able to save your customer thousands of dollars by recommending a chemical repair product designed specifically for transmissions.

But which one? There are a number of transmission stop-leak and repair products on the market. Some are designed specifically for automatic transmissions or manual gear boxes. Others were developed to take on the complexity of continuously variable (CVT) or dual-clutch (DVT) transmissions. Additional considerations when choosing the right product include evaluating exactly what’s wrong with the customer’s transmission. What symptoms are they seeing? Low transmission-fluid levels and puddles under the vehicle? A warning light? Slipping, jerking and shudder?

Reading product labels or even visiting the manufacturer’s website can help you choose the right product to recommend. Or you can save your customer time and money by recommending an all-in-one product that stops leaks and improves shift performance on most cars, trucks and vans regardless of transmission.

Repair Shop Partner

There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding car maintenance and repairs. Many drivers are unaware of when specific tune-ups and repairs are necessary, so it’s natural to doubt a mechanic who says your car needs work when it seems to be driving just fine.

TRUSTWORTHY & COMPETENT

Everyone wants a mechanic who does the job right at a fair price. Auto repair shops that partner with CarMax are routinely screened for quality, training, tools, and pricing. This gives you peace of mind, knowing that when you choose a trusted CarMax partner, you’re getting the best service at the best rate.

INDEPENDENTLY OWNED

All participating CarMax partners are independent auto repair shops. When you take your car to one of these locations, you’re supporting a local business in your community. Plus, there are over 2,600 shops in the RepairPal Certified Network, making it the largest nationwide trusted network of auto repair shops in the US. Whether you’re in La Habra or your car breaks down on a road trip in another state, you’re bound to find a certified partner near you.

Too many drivers have experienced the pain that comes with switching between auto repair shops. It’s difficult to know which mechanic you can trust, or how to tell if you’re getting ripped off when you go in for a repair. That’s why RepairPal created a process to identify which shops have committed to delighting their customers with high-quality services and predictable prices.

RepairPal is a leading provider of automotive service and repair, with a nationwide network of certified shops that meet all the necessary requirements. RepairPal’s mission is to give drivers confidence when seeking the maintenance and repairs they need for their car. Great experiences should be possible throughout the vehicle ownership lifecycle, from routine oil changes and smog checks to transmission services and engine overhauls.

Where to Go for Car Maintenance and Repairs

Before you consider where to take your vehicle for maintenance and repair, you need to understand the difference between the two. Routine maintenance items are those listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual as part of the model’s service schedule. They are intended to keep your vehicle in top operating condition. Repairs are service that needs to be performed to fix a problem. Where you take your vehicle may depend on what needs to be done.

Scheduled maintenance can be performed at any dealership; you don’t have to go to the one where you bought the vehicle. Likewise, you can take your vehicle to an independent auto-repair shop or franchise, which are typically less expensive than dealerships. Federal law gives you the right to service your vehicle wherever you like without affecting your warranty coverage. (Depending on the contract, lessees may be required to have all service performed at a dealership.) Mechanics in your dealership’s service department are specifically trained and certified in all aspects of your model’s service needs, and the shop will be equipped with all of the necessary diagnostic equipment. Because maintenance items are fairly basic, however, any professional auto shop should be able to perform the necessary tasks.

Wherever you go for service, make sure they have access to the manufacturer’s latest technical service bulletins (TSBs), which are basically instructions on how to fix common problems with a particular model. Often, an automaker will do TSB repairs for free, but you’ll have to go to a dealership to get the work done.

Repairs can range from basic tasks such as a brake job or auto-body repair to complicated service such as overhauling a transmission or diagnosing an electronics-system problem. Go to a dealership if your car is covered by the original warranty and you want the manufacturer to pay for the fix. Use a dealership, too, if your car has been recalled or is the subject of a “service campaign” in which the automaker offers to correct a defect. If you have an extended warranty, you’ll need to check the terms to see who must perform covered repairs.

If the vehicle is out of warranty, the type of problem may determine where you take it for repair. A reputable independent shop should be able to handle most common repairs. Shops that specialize in your vehicle’s brand are more likely to have the proper training, equipment, and up-to-date information. A good technician will let you know when a problem warrants a trip to the dealership or a speciality shop.

Choosing a Transmission Repair Shop

Transmission service and repair is anything but cheap. Therefore, when you choose a repair shop you had better ensure it is a choice you will not regret. On average, a transmission repair cost will range between $1000 to $4000. The last thing you want after paying this much is a slipshod service and you end up with transmission problems, again.

Poor repairs mean you end up spending more and unfortunately, the problem does not end. You must choose the right and in most case pay the price for a good service. To cut the chase, there are a few things you must look into before settling for your clutches and transmission repairs shop.

Ask for recommendations

You are not the only one who owns a car. Your family, friends, and neighbors own one too and they must have experienced transmission auto repairs. Ask them for recommendations for they may know some great repair shops. Your interest should be on their experience, how much they paid and if they got excellent customer service. If yes, you may not have to search any farther.

Keep away from cheap and over-the-top repair services

Well, repairs are not cheap. But this does not mean you have to pay an arm and leg for your car. Any shop charging expensively may not be honest. Can they really account for that exaggerated figure in what they will tackle in your car? Probably not

Certified mechanics

Anyone with spanners and greasy apron can claim to be a mechanic (after all, those are their tools of trade). But would you trust just anyone to work on your car’s transmission? No way. You have to check and ascertain that the mechanics are certified by the relevant national or state body. If they are, you can relax knowing that your car is in the best hands. This is someone who is trained for the job, has impressive experience in the field, and most importantly is passionate about their work.

Whether you choose to go for a full-time accountant or enlist the services of a professional accounting firm, choosing your accountant is a crucial milestone for your enterprise

First and foremost, the right accountant will make sure that your business is compliant with HMRC and Companies House, and also assist you to reduce tax bills, avoid unnecessary penalties and fines as well as help you to grow your business. But, many small businesses do just fine without hiring an accountant to handle their books. The decision to hire a professional accountant solely rest on you and whatever you decide will ultimately affect the survival and success of your business.

Establish Your Needs

The first step in finding the right accountant for your small business is to establish your needs. Ideally, you should ask yourself what do you need an accountant for? Is it to consolidate your annual accounts or manage your payroll, or file tax returns or simply manage the books. Whatever it is, you should identify what your business needs and then proceed to look for someone who can best meet these needs.

Do Some Due-Diligence

A report by Oxford Economics revealed that were more than 500,000 individuals who practiced as professional accountants in 2016. Why does this statistic matter to you? Well, first and foremost – it tells you that are plenty of professional accountants to choose from which is a good thing. But, because there are so many people to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right professional for your small business.

Ensure That They Are Familiar With Your Niche Industry

The best accountant for you is one who’s aligned with your business and niche industry. Look at the specific industry you’re in and check to see if an accountant has experience dealing with other businesses and companies in your niche. For instance, if you are a tech startup, you will want to hire an accountant who is also tech-driven – preferably, they should leverage different types of accounting software like FreeAgent or Xero when working for you. However, if hiring an accountant who is familiar with your industry is not a top priority for you, you can still opt to go with a traditional and all-round accountant.

How to Choose the Right Accountant for Your Business

Accounting firms are unique, and selecting the right one is crucial for your business.

Accountancy is an essential tool in the small business arsenal. Without good financial practice, the foundations of a stable brand simply cannot be built. While some microbusinesses may opt to manage their own finances, many larger firms require support from experts as their economic structure becomes more complicated. From managing payments to dealing with government obligations and taxation, accountants can provide a backbone on which the rest of a business is supported.

Similar to all facets of the modern business operation, opting for the right person or firm for the job is essential for developing the best opportunities. This is because accountants have specialties with particular skills, strengths and weaknesses. They have unique experiences and varied qualifications/accreditations. While many may offer the same basic services, it is how they offer these services – along with the special knowledge they have – that is so important to achieving your business’s specific development goals.

Understand your own business needs.

You can’t choose the right accountant for your business if you don’t understand both your financial and growth needs.

Consider that your accountant is like a piece of sports equipment. You wouldn’t invest in a tennis racket without first considering things like grip size, weight, strings type and durability, for example. What are these based on? Your needs as a player and an individual.

So how do you identify the core needs of your business as they relate to accountancy? Well, start by thinking about the basics:

What does your business do?

What industry does it operate in?

What is the turnover?

How many people do you employ?

How many clients/customers do you work with?

How much can you afford to spend on an accountant?

How to find the right accountant for your needs

No two accountants are the same, which means you’re likely to find one in your area perfectly suited to your needs. First, consider the following five points before setting out to find the right accountant for you.

Understand your needs

Get clear on what your needs are before you start looking for an accountant, so you can narrow down options. Understand what services you need someone to handle for you, and if there is a particular level of expertise or experience that will be required.

Check qualifications

Obviously you must check the qualifications of everyone you consider, too. Depending on your needs, you might be searching for a Chartered Accountant or a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), or it may not matter to you which body the accountant is certified by.

Find a specialist

You can hire a general accountant who handles a variety of jobs, or you might decide to choose a specialist for one or more areas. There are tax accountants who focus on the preparation of individual or company tax returns, and who can help you to structure your business in the most tax-effective way.

Consider location

Years ago, everyone pretty much just chose an accountant that worked in their local area. Today, thanks to technology, things have changed and it’s possible to hire an accountant from anywhere around the world. If you need to find a specialist but there isn’t one in your city, it’s really helpful to be able to go elsewhere to find the right person.

How to Choose A Trenchless Pipe Replace Professional

The Pros and Cons of Trenchless Pipe Replacement

PIPE LINING AND BURSTING

Trenchless sewage line pipe replacement can be done in one of two ways: pipe lining or pipe bursting. With pipe lining, a small, flexible, resin-coated tube is slid into the damaged pipe, then it is inflated (like the balloons that clowns shape into animals). After several hours, the tube hardens and creates a new, undamaged pipe. This pipe is slightly smaller in diameter, but shouldn’t affect the overall flow rate of the sewer. The other trenchless method, pipe bursting, is a process that pulls a completely new pipe into the old one, which fractures outward from the pressure.

PROS

There are a few obvious advantages to a trenchless method. Because there is less digging, the process is usually cheaper. With traditional methods, anywhere the line runs must be dug up, and this can include landscaping and even driveways and garages. The digging used in trenchless methods is minimal and unobtrusive. As far as durability goes, either method generally comes with a warranty of up to 50 years.

CONS

Pipe bursting and lining are not possible in all circumstances. In some places, pipe bursting is illegal, and in other instances, the joints of the pipe make these techniques impossible. In many cases, extra efforts must be taken to make sure that electrical and gas lines will be unaffected by the process, and this can lead to higher labor costs. Also, it may be harder to find plumbing experts who specialize or are trained in these methods.

List of the Pros of Trenchless Sewer Repair

It saves time when compared to the traditional access methods.
Technicians using the trench technique would spend several hours digging out around the damaged sewer line. Then several more hours to fill the trench back in were required before the repair was complete. That doesn’t include the time necessary to complete the fix in the first place. Not only does the trenchless sewer repair technique take much less time, but it also requires fewer workers to be involved with the project. Companies providing this service get a lot more done with less labor, boosting their profit margins.

It reduces consumer inconvenience during the repair process.
When a sewer line is compromised for homeowners, they no longer can use their home’s water system until technicians complete the repair. That means the occupants of the property must either haul all their water supplies in manually, then remove them the same way, or relocate to a different property until the project is finished. Before trenchless sewer repair, that could mean 7-14 days away from home. Now many repairs happen in 24-48 hours because there is such a substantial reduction in prep time.

It saves the landscaping of the homeowner.
Sewer line repairs require underground access, which means the landscaping along the pipe must be removed for the work to be done. That could cost homeowners thousands of dollars, depending on what was in the way of the repair technicians. Although a couple of holes must still be dug to access the line when performing trenchless sewer repair, there is much less damage to repair to the lawn, landscaping, or garden after the work is complete. The customer’s property gets back to normal faster and with fewer disruptions.

List of the Cons of Trenchless Sewer Repair

It may not be covered by homeowners’ insurance.
The property damage caused by a broken or clogged sewer line is not usually covered by the standard homeowners’ policy. Repairs required because of tree root penetration are not usually covered either. If you haven’t needed to worry about a sewer line repair yet, then check your policy to see if special insurance requirements, or a rider to your policy, is required for this cost to be covered. Nothing is worse than having an expensive repair to fund straight from your own pocket.

It may require work on clogs outside of the property line.
The typical urban sewage system connects the house to the public sewer main through the use of two pipes: the upper lateral and the lower lateral. The lower portion of this connection often falls outside of the property line. Should a clog occur there, many communities require the property owner to maintain and repair the connection. The city would only work on the public sewer main when issues occur there.

You must review all the paperwork included with your mortgage and housing contract with the city to understand who is responsible for what repairs outside of the property line, but still benefits your home. The cost of repairing a lower lateral issue can be upward of $50,000 using traditional repair methods.

It can sometimes be more expensive to use a trenchless repair technique.
The trenchless sewer repair technique does not work well when you have a lateral pipe that doesn’t sit below your driveway or expensive landscaping. You might find that older pipes with joints, or a collapsed pipe, could cause the costs of this repair option to be much higher than the traditional service. There is only one way to determine which option is best for your specific situation: through a professional evaluation of your problem.

Pipe Lining Can Last 50 Years or More

Most pipe lining is insured for 50 years, so that should give you an idea of how long you can expect to have the new lining in the pipe to last. The warranty covers 50 years, but the lining can last longer than this, even to around a hundred years. This is basically doubling the lifespan of the pipeline that was already in place.

Pipe Bursting Has Similar Longevity

CIPP isn’t the only way we can repair a damaged pipe. Instead of putting in a liner that seals along the inside of the older pipe, we can slide a new pipe inside the older one and then use a burster to expand the new pipeline outward to replace the older pipeline by shattering it. This service is useful for smaller diameter pipes, which aren’t as well suited to CIPP. The new pipe also has a 50-year warranty and a similar lifespan expectancy.

Which One Is Better?

This isn’t a situation where you have to worry about making a choice. Our technicians will determine which of the two is right for your situation after making an evaluation. Both have similar advantages (non-invasive, fast, long-lasting) and can be used with a range of pre-existing piping materials.

Factors That Determine The Time It Takes To Perform A Sewer Repair

The location where the clog occurred: There are specific locations of the pipe that are more difficult to access than others. As an example, typically a repair under your front yard is easier than  repair in a busy roadway. This can make the job vary from only 1/2 a day, to 2 to 4 days if in a busy roadway.

The age of your pipes: The age of your pipes can increase the length of time it takes to repair the pipe. The older the pipe, the more chance for complications, or the need for a more extensive repair.

The type of damage the clog has caused: Different types of damages can occur, and these damages will all require a different approach and repair method. For instance, grease stoppages may be able to be cleared using a sewer jet, alleviating any need for excavation. While a backpitched sewer line may need a complete replacement, which could take 3 to 5 days.

How to Dig a Trench for a Sewer Line Replacement

Digging a trench down to your sewer line is mostly just a matter of hard work. It is not technically difficult, but it can be extremely demanding physically. One adult in reasonably good shape may expect to dig a sewer trench 4 feet deep by 8 feet long by 3 feet wide in one weekend of long workdays. This estimate is based on the assumption that you have loose soil with a moderate number of roots to cut through. Clay or densely packed soil, as well as the presence of many large roots, can increase digging time significantly.

Cold climates can present additional complications. In these areas, the depth of the sewer pipe can be quite deep because the frost line (the depth the ground freezes in winter) may be 4 feet or more below the surface. Also, if your sewer line fails in winter, you are faced with the difficult task of breaking through frozen ground in freezing temperatures. This may be impossible to do by hand, and you may need to call in for earth-moving equipment.

How To Choose The Best Water Heaters

Factors That Can Cause Premature Water Heater Failure

Water heaters represent one of the most important and highly used of all home appliances. Not only do they supply you with hot water for bathing and cleaning, but they also enable other key appliances to do their job, such as washing machines and dishwashers. A water heater must be constructed to withstand the rigors of hard daily use.

The general reliability of water heaters leads many people to take them for granted, putting off regular maintenance and servicing until it is too late. Unfortunately, this can lead to premature failure and other expensive problems. If you would like to improve your knowledge of water heater maintenance, read on. This article will discuss two quiet killers of neglected water heaters.

1. Mineral Sediment

With very few exceptions, all water contains a certain proportion of mineral content. This content is generally comprised of minerals like calcium and magnesium. When present in concentrations equal to or greater than 60 parts per million, such minerals will earn the hard-water designation.

Hard water is characterized by its tendency to leave behind whitish deposits on sinks, tubs, and plumbing fixtures. These deposits can become problematic as they build up over time. This is doubly true where water heaters are concerned. Even for those with relatively soft water, mineral build up can present difficulties if it’s not dealt with on a regular basis.

The high temperature inside a water heater acts to accelerate the process of mineral build up. Over time, a layer of solid mineral sediment will accumulate on the bottom of the tank. This sediment absorbs heat that ought to be warming the water inside of the tank. As a result, your water heater will have to run for a much longer time in order to achieve the desired water temperature.

This increases the overall wear and tear being placed on the heater — often leading to premature failure of the heating element. The good news is that you can avoid sediment-related problems by having a professional flush your water heater once a year or so. Not only will this prolong the life of your heater, but it will allow it to do its job more efficiently — cutting down on your energy consumption.

2. Internal Corrosion

Corrosion represents a serious threat to water heaters for the simple reason that they spend their entire lives being exposed to the most common cause of corrosion — water. Moreover, the corrosive properties of water are amplified by the high temperatures inside of a water heater tank. Without adequate protection, corrosion would soon chew right through the sidewall of a heater.

This protection comes in the form of the component known as an anode rod. This vital component literally sacrifices itself to protect your tank from corrosion. It consists of a steel wire coated in a combination of magnesium and aluminum metals. These soft metals provide a much more appealing target for corrosion than steel. As long as your anode rod remains good, your tank will be protected.

The key thing to realize is that an anode rod will gradually be reduced in size as corrosion continues to eat away at it. Eventually, only the inner steel wire will remain. At that point, corrosion begins attacking your tank once more. Left unchecked, that corrosion will lead to weak spots in the tank walls, which opens the door to leaks and ruptures.

How do I check/replace the anode rod?

First, turn off the power to the water heater and the cold-water inlet valve at the top of the water heater.

Second, look on top of your water heater, and you’ll see a hex bolt holding the anode in place. Unscrew it and pull the rod up and out of the water heater.

If the rod has rusted through (or the space above the water heater is limited), you’ll have a hard time removing the rod and will need help from a professional plumber

Increased Water Heater Temperature Trouble

If you are concerned that your water heater temperature might be too high, follow the steps below to lower it. The recommended temperature on your tap is between 115 to 120 degrees F, according to the US Department of Energy. However, the actual tank minimum should be no less than 130 degrees, otherwise bacterial growth can corrupt your tank causing health issues. Lowering the temperature will also help you save on bills anywhere from 3% to 5% for every 10 degrees. Be sure not to lower the temperature too much, unless you and your family don’t mind a cold shower!

  • Check the temperature setting on your water heater.
  • On a gas heater there will be a knob on the gas valve near the bottom of the tank. Some gas tanks have an exposed thermostat, which can be set to the desired temperature by rotating it. Others may have the control hidden under a plate that can be moved aside to make the adjustment.
  • On an electric water heater look for the thermostat behind a panel. The thermostat has a visible scale and can be adjusted by turning the control to the desired temperature. Typically you can use a screwdriver to adjust the temperature.
  • By lowering the temperature setting you will protect the tank from overheating, protect your family from any scalding injuries and reduce the energy used to heat the water.

Water Heater Replacement

If you determine that you need to replace your water heater, you should consider the following:

  • Will you replace your system with the same type? If you’ve been considering switching to a tankless water heater, this might be a good time.
  • Did the tank size of your old water heater meet your current household needs? If not, you may want to purchase a larger tank.
  • Will you hire a plumber or install the water heater yourself? If you do it yourself you’ll need to dispose of your water heater.

How Do Sacrificial Anode Rods Work?

The most important part of a water heater is the sacrificial anode rod. It takes on all the damage so your tank and pipes don’t have to. Additionally, a healthy anode rod reduces the amount of sediment at the bottom of your tank which can raise energy bills.

Sacrificial anode rods come in one of three materials:

  • Magnesium
  • Aluminum
  • Zinc

Since water wants to attack the steel-lined water tank and any metal pipes in your home, a more reactive (least noble) metal is chosen for the sacrificial rod.

The sacrificial anode rod will corrode away completely before the water begins to attack the steel water tank. As long as anode rods are regularly checked and replaced, your water heater tank will be protected from corrosion.

Facts And Truths About How To Prevent Cockroaches

Using Traps to Get Rid of Roaches

Homemade traps are a great way to attract the roaches to a source and trap them. Although this won’t get rid of a huge amount it will at at least keep some pesky roaches away from food and living areas.

Glass Jar Trap

A simple glass jar can be used as an effective trap. You can put any number of attractive things in it including peanut butter, food scraps or coffee. Creating a trap out of a glass jar, water and an attractive meal or smell can get some of those roaches out of your way.

  • Get an empty, clean glass jar and fill it half way with water.
  • Smear some vaseline around the inside top of the jar to make it slippery and hard for them to escape.
  • Add some stuff to attract them e.g. coffee granules.
  • Mix it up and place in different areas of the house. Once a few roaches have entered the trap and died get rid of them and re-make the trap.

Borax and Sugar Trap

Cockroaches are attracted to the sweet stuff but borax will inevitably kill them so this is a perfect and cheap trap to construct. Don’t feel too deterred if you don’t find many dead cockroaches with this one as any roach that steps on it will then take it back to the nest and will act as a poison to the rest of them killing them at the source. It is NOT advised to use this method if you have small children or pets as Borax is very toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach or use a different kind of trap.

  • Mix equal parts of Borax and sugar.
  • Put this into a container or tray and place anywhere in the house where you get a high number of roaches. You should see dead roaches within a matter of hours.

Cucumber with an Aluminium Can

Some say this is effective while others don’t but have a go and see if it works for you. Apparently the roaches will be attracted to the cucumber but then putting cucumber into an aluminium can causes a chemical reaction that gives off a putrid smell that cockroaches can die from. Not overly sure if this is the case but worth a try!

  • Get some fresh cucumber peels and an aluminium can.
  • Rub vaseline on the inside of the can to stop the cockroaches from being able to escape.
  • Place the cucumber into the can and place in a convenient place.
  • Check after several hours to see if any have been caught.

What Attracts Cockroaches to a Clean House?

So what attracts cockroaches to a clean house? Cockroaches are extremely versatile pests. They have a very wide-ranging diet and will eat just about anything you can imagine. They have highly tuned water-finding senses and are experts at hiding. All of these adaptations allow them to survive in just about any environment. Roaches also pose health concerns to humans. They are known to carry diseases and can trigger allergies and asthma. They are also extremely hard to get rid of once you have cockroaches in the house. But how do cockroaches get in your clean house?

Location

Some areas are more prone to cockroaches than others. The southeastern United States, especially Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, are home to a large population of American cockroaches (also known as palmetto bugs). If you live in these areas you can expect to see these pests in your home despite cleaning on a regular basis. Unlike German cockroaches, American cockroaches aren’t associated with unsanitary conditions. They may enter your home through a gap in a window seal or through a door that is left open for a prolonged period of time.

Accessibility

Roaches come into your home in search of three things: food, shelter, and water. They have also developed the ability to use even the smallest of openings as an entryway into your house. They can come in through cracks in the exterior walls, dryer vents, or even the gaps between walls and floors. Perform a thorough evaluation of the exterior of your home and seal any entry points you find.

Moisture

Roaches need moisture to survive and this search for water will bring them into even the cleanest of homes. Leaky pipes and faucets are one of the most common attractants for cockroaches and is one of the main reasons you often see them in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. They will also hide out under refrigerators and air conditioning units to indulge in their condensation, and even drink from pets’ water bowls when left out overnight. Roaches love places that are dark and undisturbed so you can often find them in basements, in the dark corners of cabinets, and underneath large appliances, especially those that use water.

Roaches will seek out food sources wherever they can find them. Despite your best efforts to keep your kitchen spotless, these resilient pests will make do with just about anything to eat. In fact, they have been known to feast on cardboard, wallpaper paste, book bindings, grease, leather, soap, and even human hair. They can often be found hiding out in stacks of cardboard in your attic and garage, books that you’ve stored away for extended periods of time, and even behind pictures that have been hanging on the walls.

Types of roaches

Roaches have flat, oval bodies with a small head and six legs. Young roaches are pale, but they become darker in color as they mature. There are several different types of roaches in our region, including Oriental (also called water bugs), wood, German, and American roaches.

Oriental roaches, common in Ohio, are black and 1- to 1.5-inches long. Male Oriental roaches have short wings, though they can’t fly.

Wood roaches are brown and 1- to 1.75-inches long. Like Oriental roaches, male wood roaches have wings; however, this type of roach can fly.

German cockroaches are brown with dark stripes behind the head, and about half an inch long.

American cockroaches are reddish-brown with wings, and up to 1.5-inches long.

Insecticide Treatment

Although good housekeeping is helpful, insecticides are usually necessary to eliminate infestations, especially of German cockroaches, which are highly prolific. Cockroaches spend little time out in the open; places that are hard to see and reach is where they tend to be. Dark, secluded areas near food, warmth, and moisture are preferred so a bright flashlight helps when performing inspections. Emphasis should be on finding and treating preferred harborage locations, rather than randomly spraying baseboards, countertops and other exposed surfaces. If key harborage areas are missed problems are likely to continue.

Many types of insecticides are available for controlling cockroaches. Most are sold as liquid or aerosol sprays, while some are formulated as edible baits or dusts. Always read and follow product instructions.  This will help you to achieve optimal results while using the product safely. Many insecticides require the removal of food and utensils from treated areas. Removing such items often makes areas more accessible for treatment and prevents possible contamination by the insecticide.

Sprays – When using sprays, target the areas where cockroaches prefer to hide. As mentioned previously, this will vary depending upon the species. Be sure to spray any aggregations or areas with fecal spotting. Avoid spraying walls, floors, baseboards and countertops since cockroaches spend very little time in these areas. (Any roaches that do happen to traverse these areas are unlikely to remain on treated surfaces long enough to absorb a lethal dose.)

Dusts – A few insecticides used for cockroach control are applied as dusts or powders. Most familiar to householders are boric acid and diatomaceous earth. For controlling cockroaches, boric acid tends to be more effective. Roaches succumb to boric acid after crawling over treated surfaces. The tiny particles of powder adhere to the insect’s body, and are ingested as the cockroach preens them from its legs and antennae. Boric acid retains its potency almost indefinitely as long as the dust deposit remains dry.

Insecticide forms of boric acid are sold in bulk cans or a plastic squeeze bottle with a narrow applicator tip. For best results, the dust should be applied as a fine deposit barely visible to the naked eye. Cockroaches tend to avoid heavy accumulations of the powder, much as we would avoid walking through a snowdrift. The easiest way to apply such a small amount is with a ‘bulb’ or ‘bellows’ hand duster sold in hardware stores or online. Key areas to apply boric acid for German cockroaches include crevices along the edges and corners of cabinets; the wall/floor junction behind refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher; and puffed into openings where plumbing from sinks, etc. enter walls. Another potential hiding place for German cockroaches is the void (hollow space) under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. This area can be treated by puffing powder through preexisting cracks at the top of the kick panel. Accessing areas behind dishwashers, stoves, etc., may require removal of the front panel.

Prevention and monitoring

Prevention and monitoring are critical to avoiding a serious cockroach infestation. Fortunately, there are steps you can take at home to limit cockroach activity and prevent future infestations. Store food in sealed containers and keep pet dishes covered.

Keep stove tops, counters and floors clean of grease and food.

Repair plumbing leaks.

Seal cracks and holes near doors, windows and other areas of the home.

Monitor your home for signs of cockroaches: eggs, droppings, shed skins.

How To Create Led Electrical Lighting On Your Own

Start Using LED Flood Lights For Extra Illumination At Lower Costs

LED lights have evolved over the years and are becoming more and more prominent in terms of use both in the residential and industrial sectors for lighting purposes. The various benefits of LEDs have benefitted the lighting industry substantively over the last few years, and the versatility of these lights have made them exceptionally useful for various lighting purposes. LED flood lights are now increasingly being used not only in homes, but also in commercial and industrial locations where there is a requirement for a bright, steady stream of light for long durations. The various advantages of the LEDs make it possible for utilization in outdoor LED flood lights, as discussed below:

With LEDs, you receive extra lighting minus the extra consumption cost, a fact which is made possible by the extremely high efficiency LEDs. Super-efficient, these lights are approximately 80% efficient in converting electricity into light energy. Traditional bulbs and lights pale in comparison, as their efficiency levels are around the 20% mark. These lights also require less energy to light them up, as there are no metal filaments to heat us as opposed to traditional bulbs that use the filament-heating concept to create light

Less heat is generated when we use LEDs, making them much more comfortable to have around you. Due to their high efficiency levels in transforming electricity to light energy, only a small amount is converted to heat energy, which means that you do not feel hot when you are close to these lights. And it also means that you contribute less towards global warming, so LEDs can be considered environmentally-friendly lights

And stand to save substantially in terms of electricity bills. You could probably recoup up to 70 to 80 percent of your lighting bills simply by switching to these type of lights.Well, the initial investment may be considerably higher, however, when you consider that you are using them for your floodlights, your return-on-investment (ROI) would be barely a few months. And you could then save on electricity for the rest of your lights’ lifespan! And when you consider that the cost of electricity rises almost every year, you are all set for even more savings in the future

You also save in terms of maintenance costs, as LED flood light is highly durable items that can last for really long durations. The average lifespan for an LED is approximately eleven years, and most conventional bulbs last half that duration!

Save on replacement costs when you opt for these LED lights, and you can probably even forget about the maintenance factor once you switch to LEDs!

Energy Savings

LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and has the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States.  Residential LEDs — especially ENERGY STAR rated products — use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.

Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save about 348 TWh (compared to no LED use) of electricity: This is the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each), and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.

How LEDs are Different

LED lighting is very different from other lighting sources such as incandescent bulbs and CFLs. Key differences include the following:

  • Light Source: LEDs are the size of a fleck of pepper, and a mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light.
  • Direction: LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient for many uses such as recessed downlights and task lighting. With other types of lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture.
  • Heat: LEDs emit very little heat. In comparison, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80% of their energy as heat.

Do I need a special dimmer switch for LED light bulbs?

While most LED bulbs are now dimmable, not all of them are and not all of them dim in the same manner Since LEDs consume such a low wattage, many types of dimmers do not function with LED in the same way that they do with high wattage load incandescents. When dimming an LED you may notice the following:

  • Smaller amount of dimming rage (Typically 70-90% range vs. 100% with incandescent)
  • LED Bulbs may not shut off at lowest dim setting: this is caused by the dimmer thinking the bulb is completely off due to the low amount of wattage an LED consumes.
  • On dimming systems based on X10 or Power Line Carrier (PLC) control technology, LEDs may flicker when modules are communicating due to the small fluctuations in power on the line.

WHAT CAUSES LED FLICKER?

Mains electricity for residential and commercial properties operates on the principle of alternating current (AC); the process by which an electrical current and voltage is periodically reversed in an oscillating motion known as a sine wave. The sine wave constantly moves from negative to positive values in association with the magnetic polarity of the alternator generating the electricity. This fluctuating process enables high power propagation over long distances, but it also causes lights to rapidly switch on and off – or flicker. It depends on the type of light source whether this switching is noticeable or not. For example, incandescent lamps are too slow to actually respond to sine waves of the mains.

Flicker of LED lights is primarily determined by the power frequency of the mains supply, for example the UK’s mains frequency is 50 Hz, which describes an alternating cycle of 50 oscillations between negative and positive poles per second. The potential flicker frequency in a broad range of simple LED light bulbs is subsequently double the power frequency, 100 Hz and caused by rectifying AC power.

While these fluctuations are inherent in the methodology of AC power supplies, flicker can also be caused by driver or software-related issues.
